Halloween is the perfect time to turn your home into a spooky, magical adventure — and you don’t need to DIY everything from scratch. With a few easy decorations and supplies (that you can ship right to your door), you can create a Halloween scavenger hunt that thrills kids, entertains adults, and transforms your house into a haunted maze.
We did this at our own Halloween party, and it was such a hit that I knew I had to share all the details. Our guests followed rhyming clues through rooms like The Witch’s Kitchen, Mr. Vampire’s Office, The Baby Ghost Nursery, The Skeleton Pirate Crew’s Storeroom, and finally The Mummy’s Tomb Bedroom — where the treasure (Halloween treat bags) was waiting.
Here’s exactly how to set it up in your own home, complete with ready-to-order supplies, rhymes, and tips to make your party unforgettable.
🎃 Setting the Scene: Themed Rooms
Each room of your house becomes part of the scavenger hunt. Here’s how we decorated ours (plus the clue we used in each room).
🕸️ Clue 1: The Dining Table (Starting Point)
“Gather ‘round where dinner is set,
The first clue hides — can you guess yet?
Look beneath where napkins lay,
And your spooky hunt is underway!”
Our dining table (in our open-concept kitchen/dining/living space) became the starting line. With a long spiderweb tablecloth and a full Halloween party supply kit (plates, cups, napkins, cutlery), the table looked like a haunted feast.

The clue led the kids to the freezer in The Witch’s Kitchen.
🧙 Clue 2: The Witch’s Kitchen (Freezer Surprise)
“Stirring potions, casting spells,
Where the witch in darkness dwells.
Check the cold where food does freeze,
The next clue waits — if you please.”
Our Witch’s Kitchen included a food-safe cauldron bubbling with “witches’ brew” (beef stew) and a cinnamon broom by the door to add that spicy fall scent. The freezer held the next clue!

🎃 Clue 3: The Abandoned Graveyard (Living Room Fireplace)
“Jack-o’-lanterns grin so wide,
Look beneath where secrets hide.
Mist drifts low across the floor,
Find your clue, then hunt some more.”
We clustered glowing jack-o’-lanterns by the fireplace and tucked the next clue beneath one. A fog machine placed here created mist that rolled across the floor of our open living/dining/kitchen area, transforming it into an eerie graveyard.

👶 Clue 4: The Baby Ghost Nursery
“In the nursery, ghosts play,
Find the crib where they sway.
Look beneath where spirits lay,
Your next clue will show the way.”
We decorated the Baby Ghost Nursery with purple sensor string lights that flickered and moaned when anyone walked in. A motion-sensor light illuminated the crib just as the kids approached, revealing the clue hidden inside.

🦇 Clue 5: Mr. Vampire’s Office
“Next, find the place where darkness rules,
Where Mr. Vampire keeps his tools.
Look by the books, don’t be a fool,
Your clue is hidden, cold and cool.”
In Mr. Vampire’s Office, we hung rubber bats from the ceiling and walls and used Govee LED rope lights to cast a red glow across the desk. The clue was written on the whiteboard — simple but effective!

☠️ Clue 6: Skeleton Pirate Crew’s Storeroom
“Among the bones and pirate gold,
A clue is hidden, brave and bold.
Search the chest that’s dark and old,
There the secret will unfold.”
Here we used a calavera skull that opened to reveal the clue inside, plus a treasure chest prop. For extra fun, we set loose a remote-control tarantula and giant black widow toy — the kids screamed and laughed the entire time.

🧟 Clue 7: The Mummy’s Tomb Bedroom (Final Prize!)
“Where the princess mummy sleeps at night,
Among the cobwebs out of sight,
Your final clue will end the game,
Candy treasure is yours to claim!”
We draped the room in orange sensor string lights that creaked and laughed as the kids entered. We decorated with streamers for the mummy look, especially the end table where they discovered the treasure: a stash of candy in Halloween treat bags — one for each child.

🕯️ Making the Clues Look Authentic
Don’t just print on plain paper. Give your clues an aged, spooky look:
Burn the edges slightly (supervised).
Stain with tea or coffee for a weathered effect.
Roll into scrolls tied with black ribbon or twine.
🗺️ Creating a Map
For extra fun, hang a “Haunted House Map” at the entrance showing the themed rooms. This builds anticipation and makes the scavenger hunt feel like a real quest.
🍭 The Grand Finale: The Treasure
At the end, guide the kids to a decorated chest or end table where the Halloween treat bags are waiting. You can fill them with candy, small toys, or Halloween trinkets.
🕸️ Halloween Party Food

A party isn’t complete without themed food. Try:
Pumpkin cookies using pumpkin-shaped cookie cutters
Cupcakes with spooky toppers & wrappers
Apple cider or blood red punch served in this fancy three tiered party fountain.

⏰ Sample Party Schedule
- Guests arrive, mingle, and enjoy snacks.
- Start the scavenger hunt (30–40 mins).
- Candy treasure reveal!

Creating a Halloween scavenger hunt doesn’t have to be complicated. With a handful of themed supplies you can order online, a few rhyming clues, and some imagination, you can throw a party that guests will never forget.
And to leave you with a laugh:
Why don’t skeletons fight each other?
Because they don’t have the guts!
Happy haunting — and happy Halloween! 🎃
