Backyard Rabbits -About the TAMUK Breed

TAMUK stands for:

Texas A&M University of Kingsville.

That’s where this rabbit breed was created.

The breed is primarily for meat, however the furs are also very nice and useful.

Originally,  it was bred from the Flemish Giant, Champagne d’ Argent, and Californian rabbits. Naturally these rabbits are large in size growing up to be between 10 and 20 lbs.

I absolutely love this breed since not only are they great for meat, fur, compost and cuddling, but they are resistant to the Texas heat. They were specifically bred to withstand high temperatures in the 100’s degrees Fahrenheit.

Tamuk rabbits come in various colors:

Grey

Peppered White

White

Brown

Black

Speckled Grey/Black

Speckled Brown/White

They usually have smaller litters of around 6 kits, but mostly less. Tamuk’s are highly tolerant of many types of feed, but they can be hard to handle simply due to their large size and their powerful legs which have very sharp claws. Using heavy duty gloves and a jacket is advised.

We have had great luck with our rabbits and currently own 6 of the Tamuk breed. Our oldest rabbit is named Mr. Scratchy (for obvious reasons) and he is the father of all the baby rabbits born on the homestead so far. We have two does: Chip and Bonnie.

Bonnie has had one litter of kits but they all passed away. Chip has had two litters so far any we have two baby bunnies from her: a grey one named Wonder and a white one named Cream. The last Tamuk rabbit we actually bought from Winkley’s for $35. He is our only brown Tamuk, and we named him Dusty.
